Drive into this town of about 50,000, and you'll see a couple of
signs.
One reminds visitors that its sister city is Guaranda, Ecuador.
The other tells of Johnson City's status as part of an All-America
region. No city limit welcoming sign tells you that this was once
Steve Spurrier's home.
No hometown boy has ever brought Johnson City more recognition.
Spurrier won the Heisman Trophy, football's highest honor. He played
a decade of professional football. He coached a team to a collegiate
national championship.
Yet no hometown boy may be more generally reviled.
People routinely refer to Spurrier - whose University of Florida
football teams routinely whipped the home-state Tennessee ...
