Main Street Radford is coping with a huge cut in city funding not by cutting services - but by expanding them.

The program, which started in 1989, was one of only two in Virginia that got all of its money from its local government. This year, Radford City Council cut the group's operating budget from $17,557 to $1,511. The city also continues to pay the salary of Main Street Director Gerri Glass.

Instead of eliminating services, Main Street has broadened its coverage area from just the city's central business district to all of East and West Main streets.
