On the day that sponsors of a proposed Charlotte bowl game were to
make a presentation before the NCAA, terrorists commandeered three
airlines and brought a nation to its knees.
Not surprisingly, that meeting, scheduled for Sept. 11, 2001, in
Philadelphia, was postponed indefinitely.
When the NCAA committee reconvened last May, there was no
assurance that the Continental Tire Bowl would receive certification.
"They had a rule that set the limit for bowls at 25," said Ken
Haines, executive vice president of Raycom Sports. "First, we had to
get around that."
Good arguments have been made for limiting the number of bowls,
but nobody will be pointing a finger at the Continental Tire Bowl,
