Article: STAFF WRITER WINS AWARD FOR COVERAGE OF OXYCONTIN

Roanoke Times staff writer Laurence Hammack has won a national journalism award for his coverage of the painkiller OxyContin.

Hammack was honored with the Nancy Dickerson Whitehead Award, given annually by Drug Strategies, a nonprofit group in Washington that recognizes excellence in reporting on substance abuse.

He shared a first-place award with the Albany (N.Y.) Times-Union, which wrote about alcohol abuse among teens. Winners in the contest's broadcast category were National Public Radio and three Oregon television stations.
