It was heavenly cool in the underground chapels and corridors of Washington Cathedral yesterday, but it was hellish on top of it, where stone masons and carpenters continued the work begun 81 years ago when the foundation was laid for the 301-feet-high edifice.

"Even the animals out in the wild that are physically developed are looking for shade," said Peter Bill Cleveland, supervisor of the team of workers, panting and pouring sweat, that stumbled into a wooden shack for lunch shortly after noon yesterday. "Same with man. Man gets drained."
