"One of the nice things about New England, it's only an hour and
a half away from Washington," Michael Dukakis observed casually today
as he stretched out on a chaise longue in the sprawling back yard of
his friend of 20 years, Bernard Grossman.
And as he and his wife Kitty began a four-day respite from the
campaign on this famous coastal island, the sights and sounds of the
political fray were not far away.
On a nearby table, The Wall Street Journal was opened to a story
about how scholars have lately given better marks to Jimmy Carter, an
analysis that touches on the implications for Dukakis, the
