Article: GE STRIKERS PROTEST HEALTH CARE COSTS 'WE'RE TRYING TO STAND UP FOR EVERYBODY,' STRIKER SAYS

Although Dot Lester walked the picket line Tuesday, she said she's no fan of strikes. Lester, a 46-year veteran at the General Electric plant in Salem, said GE has been good to her through the years and she enjoys her work.

But like other local participants in a two-day strike organized at GE plants nationwide by the International Union of Electronic Workers / Communications Workers of America, Lester said the company left the union little choice. Union members are upset about increased costs for many workers and retirees for managed-care health care coverage - an increase GE initiated Jan. 1 without waiting for contract negotiations with the union.
