Christians opposed to increased beer and wine availability at
Roanoke Civic Center events almost got the city council to rescind a
request for an expanded alcohol license Tuesday.
But what they got instead was a council assurance that the city
would ask the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Department to find a
larger room for a 9 a.m. Thursday hearing on the issue.
In between, they witnessed a display of council parliamentary
politics.
Vice Mayor Nelson Harris, a Baptist minister, offered a motion for
the city to drop its pursuit of the license. Councilman Bill
Bestpitch quickly offered a substitute motion. The city shouldn't
