AS EVEN the most casual sports fan knows by now, the Atlantic
Coast Conference is considering expanding by three teams: Miami,
Boston College and Syracuse. Those three schools would be leaving the
Big East Conference, endangering the remaining schools and raising
concern about the manner in which the departure has developed.
Accordingly, I approved Virginia Tech's desire to defend itself by
joining a suit against the ACC, Miami and Boston College.
Though it now seems that every party involved has decided to take
a deep breath before proceeding, it seems appropriate to explain the
circumstances that led us all to this point.
