In the thick annals of born-again fervor, few conversions to a
new faith rival Lee Iacocca's. He was once Detroit's shrillest
opponent of air bags. His sputterings and whinings about the
inflatable safety devices derided them as expensive, unpopular and
unproven. Now, infused with either amazing grace or amazing gall, he
lauds them as "the state of the art in car safety."
In double full-page ads in major newspapers last week, Iacocca
asks: "Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? I had my
doubts about air bags, but today's new technology made me a
believer." All U.S.-built Chrysler cars will have air bags as
