For the first time, the United States in 1994 will be home to the
World Cup soccer finals, the grandest event of the globe's most
popular sport, soccer's governing body announced today.
Twelve U.S. cities will host the 24 national teams that compete
in 52 games during the quadrennial tournament's month-long
championship round. As host nation, the United States automatically
becomes one of the 24 finalists. An American team last participated
in the finals in 1950.
Washington's RFK Stadium or Annapolis' Navy-Marine Corps Memorial
Stadium is "very likely" to be selected as a site for some games,
with Miami's Joe Robbie Stadium or the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.,
getting the final game, ...
