Jeremy Mayfield's charging car couldn't.
Newman rallied from a lap down, held off Mayfield and saved enough
fuel to collect his series-high seventh victory of the season Sunday -
the most wins by a driver since Jeff Gordon won seven races in 1999.
Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick and Gordon completed the top five.
Newman's victory in the MBNA America 400 came on a day when NASCAR
ran its first Cup race with its new rules on caution flags and pit
road procedures. Those rules were tested seven times in the 400-lap
