An Asiatic black bear that recently escaped from Natural Bridge
Zoo and was shot to death by a hunter will not go on display in a
local sporting goods store, the manager says.
Doug Carnera of Troutville shot the 400-pound male bear when he
came upon it on a friend's property in Rockbridge County on Saturday.
Carnera didn't know the bear and its mate had escaped from the zoo
last Thursday when a zoo worker failed to properly latch a gate.
The first bear was shot to death by the zoo's owner last Thursday
night after it broke into a man's house. Carnera said he felt bad
about killing the second bear until he learned that it had been shot
several times by its owner last Thursday.
