One of the highlights of the current dance season undoubtedly
will be the return to Washington of the Paris Opera Ballet, headed by
Rudolf Nureyev. The company performs Nureyev's versions of
"Cinderella" and "Swan Lake" in five evenings at Wolf Trap this week,
starting tomorrow night.
For the second time, however, Washington dance audiences will be
getting only half a loaf, and not necessarily the tastier half. The
really novel side of the company's repertory-reinvigorated, like the
troupe itself, since the start of Nureyev's directorship in 1983-will
not receive exposure here.
Why is this? Ask yourself why it is that Washington
consistently misses out on some of the major innovative ...
