Article: France Seeks to Reinstate Controversial Wealth Tax

The Socialist government decided today to reinstate a much-disputed wealth tax, setting the stage for a crucial test of President Francois Mitterrand's attempt to enlist support from political centrists.

The controversial measure, aimed at 110,000 French families worth $666,000 or more, in effect would resume a levy imposed when Mitterrand first took office in 1981. Hotly contested as a symbol of soak-the-rich thinking, it was abolished by the conservative majority that governed under Jacques Chirac from 1986 until last May.
