The Socialist government decided today to reinstate a
much-disputed wealth tax, setting the stage for a crucial test of
President Francois Mitterrand's attempt to enlist support from
political centrists.
The controversial measure, aimed at 110,000 French families worth
$666,000 or more, in effect would resume a levy imposed when
Mitterrand first took office in 1981. Hotly contested as a symbol of
soak-the-rich thinking, it was abolished by the conservative majority
that governed under Jacques Chirac from 1986 until last May.
Centrist leaders have warned that Prime Minister Michel Rocard's
approach to getting the new measure passed in parliament, probably
