A man who owns one of the finest back yard gardens in Georgetown
has nothing but sand and rocks in the lot of his cottage at Lewes,
Del. "I just don't want the struggle with the elements," he says.
Washington-area residents with summer houses on the seashore
often are surprised to discover that coping with the seemingly
innocent sand is far more difficult than with our much maligned clay,
and that even occasional high winds carrying salt spray can make for
permanent stormy weather in the garden.
Just about the only advice that applies to both sand and clay is
that thick mulch is an attractive way to conserve moisture and to
moderate temperature extremes.
