Celebrating 1,000 years of Christianity in what is now the Soviet
Union, Pope John Paul II embraced the leader of Ukrainian Catholics
Sunday and urged freedom of worship for that underground church.
Thousands of Ukrainian Catholics from the United States, Canada,
Europe, Australia and South America joined the pope in St. Peter's
Basilica for a mass said in the elaborate Byzantine-Ukrainian rite.
The mass was the centerpiece of six days of celebrations in Rome
to mark the advent of Christianity 1,000 years ago in Kievan Rus',
the ancient name of what is now the Ukraine, in the Soviet Union.
