Suffering from a series of military defeats and growing economic
hardship, Iran announced today it has accepted a year-old U.N.
Security Council appeal for an immediate cease-fire and peace
negotiations to end its eight-year-old war with Iraq.
The Iranian acceptance of an unconditional cease-fire, which
dropped previous demands to condemn Iraq as the aggressor, was
greeted with reserve and suspicion by the Iraqi government of
President Saddam Hussein. But Baghdad gave no immediate indication
it plans to go back on its earlier expressed willingness to accept
the U.N. outline for peace, embodied in Security Council Resolution
598, adopted last July 20.
