Article: NO PCBS FOUND IN RADFORD'S WATER SUPPLY [Corrected 04/10/04]

The head of Radford's Water Department said Wednesday that PCBs have never been detected in the city's water supply, which is drawn from the New River not far downstream from where high levels of the dangerous chemicals were found.

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality announced Tuesday that soil from a long-closed limestone quarry contains more than 500 times the allowed levels of PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls. The quarry is on the bank of the New River, but DEQ officials said it is too early to say whether the PCBs are reaching the river.

Radford Water Department chief Lawrence Rice said the city's water is tested quarterly and no PCBs have ever turned up in it.
