Listen to the Eastern High School Choir, whose 54 members return
to Washington this afternoon after a triumphant European tour, and
the impression is of talented, sophisticated, disciplined,
near-professional musicians.
Listen to the adults who have worked with this outstanding
group, and the impression is of youngsters who have learned so much
more than how to make fabulous music. Joyce Garrett, their director,
has taught them lessons in life that will stand them in good stead
for years to come.
She has, quite obviously, taught them to sing. You don't win
second place at Vienna's International Youth and Music Festival-the
