Our conversation with Carl Lewis begins shortly after the world's greatest track and field star was bumped from "Late Night With David Letterman" on NBC, the network of the Summer Olympics, in favor of Iggy Pop. After changing from his Letterman outfit-an oddly muted gray and tan floral print suit that looked like it once may have covered a couch-into black stretch pants and a Toll House brown shirt, crisply buttoned at the neck, Lewis repairs to a Chinese restaurant, where he talks about his career for almost two hours. We pick it up in 1984, beginning on that fateful August evening when Lewis won the long jump, but lost the hearts and minds of the American public.
