Huts made of camouflaged ponchos and plastic sheets are spreading
across the verdant landscape here as Nicaraguan rebels return to
Honduras to await their fate at the hands of the U.S. Congress.
Six months ago, most of the estimated 10,000 troops who live in
this mountainous area 20 miles from the Nicaraguan border were
attacking Sandinista outposts. Now, the rebels, known as contras,
spend their days playing volleyball and baseball, studying human
rights or taking refresher courses in map reading.
The role of these fighters in efforts to democratize Nicaragua is
sure to be a topic this week when Secretary of State George P. Shultz
meets in Guatemala with Central American foreign ...
