King Hussein's decision to relinquish all claims to the
Israeli-occupied West Bank he once ruled has revived the debate in
Israel about annexing the Palestinian territories occupied in the
1967 Arab-Israeli war.
At a meeting today of Israel's ruling inner cabinet, two
ministers from the conservative Likud bloc, Ariel Sharon and Yitzhak
Modai, spoke up in favor of various annexation schemes to fill the
void left by Hussein, including the idea of extending Israeli law to
Jewish settlement areas in the West Bank.
But ministers from Foreign Minister Shimon Peres' Labor Party
argued that any plan to annex the West Bank would saddle Israel with
