Article: Pay Disparity Continues, Study Says; Wright Is Urged To Crack the Whip

Rep. Lynn M. Martin (R-Ill.), leading a slow-moving battle to give women and minorities the same rights in Congress that Congress has imposed on the rest of the nation, yesterday released her second survey of the pay disparity between men and women on House committee staffs.

Guess what: Not much has changed since 1985. Most of the high-paid positions are filled by men; the lower-paid positions are occupied mainly by women.

The figures: 72 percent of men on House committees make more than $40,000, but 69 percent of women make less than that. At the lower end of the pay scale, 79 percent of women make less than $20,000, while 21 percent of men make less than that.
