Salem Sheriff Roger Surber doesn't remember who took the call, but the woman's request was urgent: Answering her call to civic duty would interfere with the new mother's ability to breast-feed.

She was excused from jury duty. That was a few years ago, when nursing mothers had to plead the inconvenience of jury service.

But beginning July 1, Virginia will become the seventh state to exempt breast-feeding mothers from sitting in judgment of their peers in a courtroom.

Breast-feeding moms in Virginia will get a pass, joining - among others - those over 70, mariners performing maritime service and caregivers for a disabled person. Virginia law already exempts parents of children younger than 16 ...
