Wayne Gretzky, widely regarded as the greatest hockey player in
history, was traded yesterday by the Edmonton Oilers to the Los
Angeles Kings in one of the biggest deals in sports history.
Gretzky, 27, has been the National Hockey League's most valuable
player in eight of his nine seasons and led the Oilers to Stanley Cup
championships in four of the last five years. The superstar center
shares or holds more than 40 NHL scoring records.
Gretzky is such a talent in his sport that the trade drew
comparisons with the sale of Babe Ruth by the Boston Red Sox to the
