AS YOU HAVE probably noticed, the weather this summer in
Washington has been more than normally hot, vile, disgusting and
inhumane. But as August develops, it's also getting interesting.
The temperature has now been up to 90 degrees for 16 days straight.
The all-time record is 21 90-degree days in a row, set in the
memorably detestable summer of 1980. There begins to emerge a
glimmer of a possibility that this year will be a record breaker.
That introduces an element of sporting attention.
The National Weather Service provides the meteorological
equivalent of the racing form. It says that over the three decades
from 1951 to 1980, there was an average of 9.8 days each August when
