Article: THE JOYS OF THE JUG BAND

Back in the early '60s, musician Jim Kweskin formed a jug band that made folk and blues music on anything from washtubs to household utensils. It popularized the original jug bands: low-budget jazz ensembles that played in the South during the '20s and '30s.

The Jug Band was revived a few years ago with a group of musicians that includes guitarist John Sebastian, singer Maria Muldaur, mandolin and piano player Geoff Muldaur and washtub bass player Fritz Richmond. Richmond, a former member of the Jug Band, is a virtuoso on the washtub bass, washboard, homemade kazoo and, of course, the jug.
