The Association of Tennis Professionals, which includes most of
the world's top men's players, announced today it would establish an
alternative tour to begin play in 1990. ATP Vice President Brian
Gottfried said eight of the world's 10 top-ranked players have
committed to the new tour.
The action, taken after the Men's International Professional
Tennis Council on Monday rejected the ATP's bid for more power, is
the latest in a sport beset by political turmoil for longer than 20
years. The ATP's proposal would have structured the Men's
Professional Tennis Council, which oversees men's tennis, with
independent representatives from business as well as from players and
