Around the country, as September approaches, lunch boxes are
being dusted off or bought anew. It's the return of the peanut
butter and jelly season.
On First Street, at Seattle's colorful Pike Place Market,
though, peanut butter and jelly knows no season. Here now and all
year long it has an entire store to itself.
PB & J, as the store is called, looks more like a gift shop than
a grocery. Indeed, it's kind of the L.L. Bean of the peanut butter
and jelly sandwich.
To start with the basics, the peanut butter is ground in-house.
That's commonplace enough, but PB & J also grinds cashew, hazelnut,
almond, pecan and peanut-pecan butters. They're pure nuts, unsullied
by salt, sugar or oil.
