Martina Navratilova is not taking this well. She has arrived at
the U.S. Open to find that her record is argued over, her game is
judged to be past its prime and her achievements are about to be
outdone by a presumptuous 19-year-old. No, she is not taking this
very well at all, judging by the bewildered slope of her shoulders
and the wounded expression in her remark, "Now it's like I don't even
exist."
Navratilova is not regarded as the two-time defending champion
here so much as a meaningful bit player, a significant but cardboard
foil for Steffi Graf. The West German teen-ager is attempting to
