Article: John M. Wells, Activist Minister, Dies at 60

The Rev. John M. Wells, 60, a former minister of the Reston Community Church Unitarian Universalist who was active in the civil rights and antiwar movements, died of cancer Sept. 4 at his home in Fairfield, Pa.

Mr. Wells headed the Reston church from 1972 until 1987, when he moved to Pennsylvania. A southerner by birth, he became interested in the civil rights movement while serving in the Air Force in the 1950s. He took part in the 1963 March on Washington and he joined the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in the Selma-to-Montgomery, Ala., march in 1966.
