At the end of a West Coast swing in which they lost six of 10 but
somehow held onto first place in the American League East, the Boston
Red Sox returned to a friendly port tonight.
Not Fenway Park, but to Memorial Stadium, where 19,614 fans
showed up, most of them here to cheer the Olde Towne Team.
They were not disappointed. The Red Sox won for the 23rd time in
28 games here, getting three hits and three RBI from Dwight Evans to
beat the Baltimore Orioles, 4-1, and take over sole possession of
first place in the AL East.
They haven't been in first place alone since the last day of the
1986 season, and in a race that has turned into a mad scramble the
victory gives them a one-game lead ...
