They've lost Oil Can Boyd to an injury, and failed to trade for
another pitcher. So the Boston Red Sox, hoping for one surprise,
have sorted through guys named Steve Curry and Steve Ellsworth and
Jeff Sellers.
And Wes Gardner. He came three years ago in the Bobby Ojeda deal
with the New York Mets, and when the Red Sox have most needed
pitching, he has given it to them.
Tonight, he tossed the first complete game of his career, a
five-hitter, as the Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles, 6-1, before
19,124 at Memorial Stadium.
Gardner (7-4) won as the Red Sox stretched their lead to two
games over Detroit, 4 1/2 over Milwaukee and five over New York in
