Nurses at the Washington Hospital Center authorized their union
yesterday to call a strike in 10 days if they cannot reach agreement
on a new contract, raising the stakes in a labor dispute that could
disrupt services at the area's largest private hospital.
With about 15 dissenting votes, about 475 nurses approved the
strike notice in a secret ballot at the Hospital Center, said Mary
Joyce Carlson, director of labor relations for the D.C. Nurses
Association. Two-thirds of the hospital's 1,200 registered nurses
are members of the union, according to union officials.
"The nurses really feel that their time has come," Carlson said.
