Eddie Wagoner "gave her a whirl" Thursday. But competition was fierce, and the 29-year-old auctioneer from Independence, vying for one of eight slots to attend the 2007 World Livestock Auctioneer Championship in June, did not make it to the final round.

"It was a very tough competition," Wagoner said afterward. "There's a bunch of us that didn't make it." Many of the contestants, he added, were "top-quality professional auctioneers."
