The 20,767 at Flushing Meadow were looking for Ponce de Leon to
take a sip from the Fountain of Youth and go out vanquishing again,
plundering pretenders to the throne. But Jimmy Connors is just a
man, a tenacious and gifted one, but still a man, and tonight he lost
to a better one. Tonight.
Fourth-seeded Andre Agassi took all of the old man's best shots
and pounded some more forehands, reaching the semifinals of the U.S.
Open with a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 victory, and setting up a semifinal
match with top-seeded Ivan Lendl. At 18, Agassi became the youngest
American to reach the semifinals here, as he was when he made the
semifinals and finals at the French Open.
