October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as you may have noticed
with all of the "pink ribbon" events being offered. The importance
of becoming aware of breast cancer is to learn more about preventing
the disease, encourage early detection through regular mammograms,
to raise funds for ongoing research and educational programs and to
honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors.
Few people I know have not been touched by breast cancer, either
directly or indirectly. It has been estimated that at any given time
in the United States, 2 to 3 million women have been diagnosed,
treated and cured of breast cancer or are currently living with it.
