Steffi Graf completed the Grand Slam of tennis with a minimum of
trouble and celebration today. The 19-year-old West German defeated
fellow teen-ager Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina in three sets to win
the women's U.S. Open title.
Graf surged predictably over 18-year-old Sabatini, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1,
and only the second set was remotely unexpected. She became just the
fifth person and third woman in history to sweep the Grand Slam
events in the same calendar year. The last to do so was Margaret
Court in 1970.
Graf was clearly at a loss to explain the ease with which she
accomplished the paramount feat in tennis, and uncertain of what to
