Creating and maintaining diversity at Virginia's colleges and
universities will require thinking beyond traditional recruitment
methods.
Open houses and campus tours are noble efforts, but if young
prospects visit campuses and don't see students like themselves, they
may seek admission elsewhere -- or nowhere.
Therein lies the tragedy.
The University of Virginia is facing a decline in the number of
black first-year students. Granted, too much can't be made of a
single-year drop in numbers that are small to begin with -- from 319
to 260 of a total first-year enrollment of about 3,100.
