The good thing for tennis, as its new No. 1 male player said, is
that there is a new face at the top. But the sport's challenge now
is to find someone who can be the best player in the world and not
live in Greenwich, Conn.
The Greater Greenwich Open, called the U.S. Open in some circles,
ended Sunday with the longest singles championship match in the
tournament's history. Luckily for the participants, Mats Wilander
and Ivan Lendl, they live near each other in Greenwich. Perhaps one
gave the other a ride in to beat the terrible New York traffic.
Wilander came on with each match here to walk into the final
without having to play a seeded player. His toughest match had come
