Q. I am a healthy 24-year-old woman who recently had a very frightening experience. Toward the end of my pregnancy, I developed a slight rise in blood pressure along with some protein in my urine and swelling of my legs. My doctor said I had pre-eclampsia and prescribed bed rest. I did all right and eventually went into labor and delivered a healthy girl. But I then developed full-blown eclampsia and suffered a seizure that had to be treated with intravenous magnesium.

What causes eclampsia, and how is it treated? Before I contemplate another pregnancy, I'd like to know how to avoid a repeat of this nightmare.
