Did "the Jews" get Fred Malek? Did they bring down the senior
aide to George Bush over a matter both trivial and dated? You would
be forgiven for thinking so given the manner in which Malek himself
left the campaign-with Shakespearean praise from Bush for being,
among other things, "a most honorable man." He forgot to say Malek
was the noblest careerist of them all.
But Malek's honor is a new-found trait. In 1971, as President
Nixon's White House personnel chief, he was ordered to compile a list
of Jewish officials at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nixon, in one
of his raging cesspool moods, suspected a "Jewish cabal" at the
