An estimated one in five Americans has high blood pressure
(hypertension), yet it is often untreated or undiagnosed. That's
because it sometimes doesn't present symptoms until it has already
wreaked havoc on the vascular system.
High blood pressure can lead to obstruction of the arteries in the
heart, brain, legs, eyes and kidneys, resulting in stroke, heart
attack, kidney failure and other disabilities.
Blood pressure readings measure the amount of pressure exerted on
the arteries during both phases of the heartbeat -- contraction and
resting. Normal blood pressure ranges from 140 over 90 or less. It
needs to be monitored periodically, as it varies constantly.
