At exactly one o'clock on Monday afternoon, a white globe topped
by a heraldic figure will appear on the screens of certain cable
television subscribers, and over upbeat contemporary music, a voice
will proclaim: "You are watching VISN, the faith and values network."
With almost no fanfare, a new and unprecedented ecumenical
mainline religious television network will become available to about
18 million cable subscribers, a number its backers expect to double
or even triple.
In contrast to better-known religious TV shows, VISN promises its
viewers no on-the-air appeals for money, no hard sell, no attacks on
