Walter P. Chrysler Jr., 79, an art collector and museum
benefactor whose father founded Chrysler Corp., died of cancer Sept.
17 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital here.
A former Chrysler Corp. executive, he had devoted much of his
life to building a multimillion-dollar art collection that is now
housed at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk.
Mr. Chrysler was born in Oelwein, Iowa, where his father worked
for the Chicago Great Western Railroad. Soon afterward, the elder
Chrysler went to work for General Motors and the family moved to New
York. In 1925, Walter Chrysler Sr. founded his own car company.
The younger Chrysler purchased his first work of art, a Renoir,
for $350 at age 14. But the ...
