In victory and defeat in federal court last week, McDonald's
Corp. and Quality Inns International Inc. were dead even in one
respect: neither company distinguished itself in a highly publicized
and, at times, ludicrous dispute over rights to a name.
As has been reported, a federal judge in Baltimore ordered
Quality Inns of Silver Spring to drop the McSleep Inn name that
Quality Inns had chosen for its new "luxury" budget hotel chain. The
ruling upheld McDonald's claim that McSleep infringed on the
trademark of the popular fast-food chain.
McDonald's. McSleep. McFuss. McFarce. McSilly.
Add them up and the net result-McDonald's victory aside-is a
corporate shouting match that detracted ...
