As gas prices hover around $2.65 per gallon and motorcycle sales
continue to rise, an upsurge in motorcycle fatalities has taken its
toll in the New River Valley.
When former Town Councilman Dale Ashworth's motorcycle collided
with a car at the corner of East Main and Depot streets, his death
shocked the Christiansburg community. His death on June 8 was the
third motorcycle fatality in the New River Valley in 2007.
Motorcycle sales are up nationwide and in Virginia, as are the
number of motorcycle fatalities, statistics show. According to the
Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, there were 38 motorcycle
fatalities in 1999 while there were 70 fatalities in 2006. The number
