Article: A Population Explosion That Didn't Happen Then And Won't Happen Now

Two recent articles, by Lester R. Brown {"Bring on the Family
Planners," Sept. 8} and Hobart Rowen {"The Fact the World Bank Won't
Face," Sept. 15}, suggest that the myth of the population explosion
is being hauled out and dusted off yet another time. Since the
Catholic Church figures as a major villain in Rowen's retelling of
the tale, a reply from that quarter seems in order.
It isn't hard to see what's going on. The Reagan administration
will soon be leaving the scene. Predictably, propaganda is beginning
on behalf of a shift in U.S. population policy, especially relaxing
the ban-which antedates the Reagan years by a decade-on support for
abortion.
