Carl Lewis won his first gold medal of these Olympics when he
leaped 28 feet 7 1/2 inches in the long jump Monday, the first time
anyone has won consecutive Olympic gold medals in that event and his
56th straight long jump victory. And with Ben Johnson stripped of
his 100-meter gold medal Tuesday, Lewis-now the 100 champion, too-is
halfway toward repeating his gold medal grand slam of 1984.
Teammates Mike Powell (27-10 1/4) and Larry Myricks (27-1 3/4)
won the silver and bronze, giving the United States its first sweep
of any Olympic event in Seoul.
It was a very good jump by Lewis, considering the blustery, cold,
desolate conditions of midafternoon in Seoul, but it was not his best
